Attendance list disappears – not handed back or are taken by
students
By having a centralized system, once a student scans the data it is recorded on the
system
Time consuming - it takes a while for students to complete class
lists (filling in information or searching for their details if it was a
pre-create list by the lecturer)
Five minutes before and after a lecture is more than enough to capture attendance
for large groups
Attention span is interrupted
With attendance completed – students concentrate on the lecture/content
Students not signing lists or forgetting to sign or not having enough
time to sign (if one large list is distributed)
Because attendance takes place at the start and end of the class less students
forget to sign (or scan) – visual reminder to scan
Students sign for their friends or add fake information
The attendance data is more accurate, a student needs to tap their own card to
register the attendance session. By having the RFID reader at the front, it also
discourages students from scanning multiple student cards and aiding friends
Unreadable information due to bad handwriting (if the numbers
very unrecognisable the lecturer had to search through the class list
to match the student number to the correct student
More accurate attendance can be taken – unique identifiers are embedded in the
cards that link up to the actual student data. Errors are drastically reduced
Lack of quick feedback for the lecturer/support units
After class, the lecturer can look at the attendance once copied to the dashboard
section
Add to administrative duties of lecturer/support units
Little administrative duties are present.
Difficult to visualize attendance patterns and to determine the
difference between overall module level attendance vs group or
individual attendance
By using the dashboard and filters, information can be easily visualized.
Some students just sign the manual register and then leave the
class
By having the electronic version, students are informed that attendance might be
re-taken at the end of the session if it is detected that many has left the session.
This resulted in more students staying for the whole class.
