Who will take leadership in promoting a focus on student success?

The higher education institutions?
•
It is improbable that the universities will take the lead in changing the status quo
without substantial external stimulus or pressure.
•
Student bodies?
•
Much energy for change but currently too narrowly focused and volatile.
•
USAf and other representative academic bodies?
•
No indications at present, possibly because of the same systemic influences as
affect the institutions, and the current burden of day-to-day demands.
•
The state, primarily the DHET?
•
In the best position to take strong leadership but impeded by factors such as
shortage of capacity and of strong creative ties with relevant sectors of the
academic community. Would be well supported by national bodies like CHE.
•
The higher education development community?
•
Strong indications of the need for this community to mobilise around the student
success goal and to contribute intellectual and advocacy leadership, as well as
capacity support for national bodies when required.
